Sony Considered Natal-Like Tech But Passed

Since the debut of both Project Natal and the PlayStation Move at last year’s E3, Sony has made it clear that they too were approached by 3DV Systems to incorporate 3D camera technology into their console, only they opted to go in a different direction. While most gamers remain skeptical of both approaches to motion control, it is clear that Sony believes their technology is superior and will provide a much more unique experience.

Considering Sony’s prior work with a 3D-based camera controller (remember the EyeToy?), why would Sony decide to move in a completely different direction; especially one that so closely resembles the Wii? Hit the cut to find out.

Good News: Goozex Now Trades Retro Games

Itching to play A Boy and His Blob, but can only find your copy of Spy Hunter in your gaming closet? Fear not my retro game-loving friends, Goozex is here to help. Goozex is already the green way to play and trade games, and now it just got better with the addition of retro game trading. Think of Goozex like a mashup of Chegg, Netflix, and an online dating service - Goozex surfs your game queue (like a wish list) and finds someone that has the exact game you want so you can trade titles - peer-to-peer - for just a buck. Goozex members already have access to over 20,000 Playstation, Wii, and Xbox titles, and now they can happily trade games for their NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and Atari 2600 consoles.

Hands-on: NBA Jam

March 31, 2010 by Yukiko

You need to get the preconception that NBA Jam is part of the rigid “sports game” genre out of your mind right this second. I can understand why you might possess this notion: for gamers whose youths were spent mastering the original game’s showboating mechanics, Jam is one of the few franchises they can call up when accused of not playing sports games. For folks unfamiliar with the franchise, one might logically associate a bouncy, orange sphere with its eponymous sport: “basketball.”

Yet, based on my time with EA Canada’s Wii-make of NBA Jam earlier this month, I don’t think the “sports game” archetype — a turn-off for many non-sports enthusiasts — is an accurate descriptor for what’s going on here. Jam is a “party game” and will likely overtake Rock Band and Boom Blox as my entertainment of choice while hosting a social gathering. Provided, of course, attendees are prepared to get buffeted with an unstoppable deluge of smack talk.

Trauma Team to be less traumatic on wallets

March 31, 2010 by Yukiko

Atlus announced the price point for Trauma Team today, and we believe it improves the game’s retail prognosis: It’s $39.99. That’s less than the retail price of most Wii games for a game with six different, interesting modes of play. Trauma Team will be out May 18.

To mark the announcement, Atlus sent out a dramatic new trailer for the game. It’s oddly conflict-oriented, with lots of talk about “final battles” and “wars” and “fights.” Such destructive language for a game about helping sick people! That’s no kind of bedside manner.

Have you ever wanted to play your Wii games in HD? Well, now you can…sort of. VDigi has released a Wii HD Upscaler that supposedly allows you to play games in full 1080p resolution. The Upscaler comes with both HDMI and DVI support, making the Wii now playable on both TVs and monitors.

Though, after analyzing the comparison screens, does this device actually work or is this just a $75 hunk of plastic? Find out after the cut.

The iPad Launches Saturday: The Heat Is On

If you hadn’t already preordered your iPad when it became available earlier this month (and trust me - there were a lot of you), then you’ll have to wait an extra week to get your hands on it , while your keyboard accessories will take even longer to arrive. I’m not surprised at the iPad fever - since it seems everything that Apple releases turns to gadget gold - but I guess I am surprised that Apple didn’t anticipate the lust for the tablet and make more to begin with. Reminds me of the great Wii shortage of 2007.

And just because you didn’t get a walk-through of the iPad by Steve Jobs at the launch event in January doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get your own personalized tour of the iPad now. Apple just released a series of walk-throughs on its site to bring you up to speed on all that the iPad is capable of. Consider it an amuse-bouche to the full iPad meal coming up later this week.

NintendoWare Weekly: WarioWare D.I.Y. Showcase, Ogre Battle 64, Metronome

WarioWare D.I.Y. isn’t the only new WarioWare out this week. Well, it sort of is, because WarioWare D.I.Y. Showcase is basically an extension of the DS game, but Showcase also has a load of new microgames on its own.

Joining Showcase on the Wii is, believe it or not, a Nintendo 64 game on Virtual Console! And on DSiWare … a metronome and an instrument tuner? See the full list after the break.

Could Dead Space: Extraction Be Coming To Xbox 360, PlayStation 3?

More Evidence For The Obvious: Dead Space 2 Coming Sometime Next Year

Dead Space: Extraction was an impressive game, possibly the best on-rails shooter released for the Wii. But Electronic Arts didn’t release Dead Space on the Wii, so it always struck me as a bit odd they’d release a spin-off on a different console. It’s not hard to imagine Dead Space: Extraction working on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 once Project Natal and PlayStation Move launch, however, so I asked the Dead Space team at PAX East if that could eventually happen.

"That keeps coming up," said a smiling executive producer Steve Papoutsis.

Clearly, I wasn’t the first person to float the idea past him.

"It’s definitely something that sounds pretty cool," he said. "That’s all you can really say about that."

I was left with the impression that Dead Space: Extraction arriving elsewhere in the future was a distinct possibility. That’d be a nice little treat before Dead Space 2’s released, wouldn’t it?

PAX East 2010: The oddest Street Fighter battle you’e ever seen

You’ll find no one here who’s not down for a round or two (or 10) of Street Fighter. No one! In fact, I’m half-convinced that that’s Greg under that helmet.

There’s a room set aside here at PAX for free play, where you can take a load off and try your hand at Heavy Rain, Bayonetta, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and, of course, Street Fighter IV.

I can guarantee that even ol’ Blockhead here would destroy me in the game.
