NPD analysis Anita Frazier talks about this months sales
he U.S. video games industry declined for the fifth consecutive month, bringing year-to-date sales to $8.16 billion, down 14% from the same time period last year.
In order for the industry to come in flat or slightly up for the total year, the back five months of the year have to come in 11% (or more) higher than the last five months of last year.
While year-to-date results are weak, there are some big titles set to be released over the next several months, including Madden this month, which should help spur sales. The worst comps should be behind us, and looking beyond August we have The Beatles: Rock Band, Halo 3: ODST, and of course, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to look forward to.

Hardware sales have slowed considerably on nearly every platform. The Xbox 360 is the only console system showing a unit sales increase year-to-date, while the NDS has the highest sales of all hardware platforms both for the month, and year-to-date.
Wii Sports Resort was the top-selling software SKU for the month with 508K units sold with a 2.5% attach rate to the hardware install base.
Of all genres, the music/dance genre has suffered the greatest declines this year, with nearly $390 million less revenues than the same time period last year.

Peter Moore talks about Nintendo’s Wii and the affect it had on EA
“The dynamics changed with the launch of the Wii–play and fun was coming back in, the demographic was changing enormously, and the amount of time to play was being compressed. [They (the staff)] couldn’t take the change of pace. It was hard. A lot of people at that time thought they would move on from our studios–they wanted to chase the core consumer.”
“Our game had become stale, it had become predictable. (EA Sports was) big, monolithic, huge, we were using large marketing vehicles to talk to our consumers. You say mea culpa, we’ve got some issues here, how do we resolve it?”

“The Wii consumer needs different experiences from that core audience, no longer can we rely on licenses to drive our business. Fun and entertainment are of more value here than authenticity. We were porting a few years ago, and it clearly wasn’t working. By simply looking at what particular people are looking for in a niche, we’re providing a solution to the challenges of health, fitness and well-being. …not only is it a great product, but it’s changing people’s lives. …we’re finally talking to girls, and women are now part of the EA Sports community.”

Sega tells Sonic gamers to trust them, glory days to come back
Mike Hayes, the head of Sega Europe/Sega America had alittle bit to say about the Sonic franchise today while talking in an interview.
“If you read everything, we need to be all things to all gamers with Sonic, and that’s a difficult thing to do. Trying to put everything into one game and making everybody happy is impossible. And I think that’s something clear going forward. I think we’ve had challenges with [the 2006] Sonic the Hedgehog and Unleashed. [The 2006 game] Sonic the Hedgehog sells extremely well at a budget price. So clearly it’s very popular with a young audience. But first and foremost is: We’ve got to make a quality game for that audience. Does quality mean it’s got to be a Metacritic 90 percent? Well not necessarily. It’s just got to be quality that’s appropriate for them. Then we’ve got our core fans, and what we need to do is now and then produce a Sonic that will appeal to those fans specifically. Often it can be looking at another take on the nostalgic take on Sonic. Or re-issues. They’re very popular. Fans do like that.”
